And the Snowflake Challenge continues! I'm combining two days into one post again. Day 4 doesn't actually require a post, but I'd like to write a short evaluation of my experiences with it anyway.

Hi all!

I thought it would be fun to participate in the Snowflake Challenge this year. I’ve seen other people’s posts about it in the past and was always intrigued, but I’ve never participated before. Since I finally have a bit more time on my hands and the challenge is running right now, I’'m going to dive right in :D

Fandom Snowflake Challenge – Day 1

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place – the things that give you joy, calm you or keep you sane.

Beautiful old books. I have always been a massive bibliophile and love everything about books. Books take centre stage in my home, my studies, my hobbies and half my daydreams. There’s very little that makes me more excited than admiring the craftsmanship of an antique handbound book. Luckily, as an old book collector, I have a few of them, so I can look at them whenever I want to!

Bookbinding. This is not very surprising after my previous ‘happy place’, but I don’t just want to look at books, I like to make them too. I’m a very crafty person and have always had lots of crazy hobbies, but bookbinding is one of the few that I’ve been doing regularly for years now. I've experimented with it on my own for a few years, but I’m currently taking lessons from a professional bookbinder to learn the techniques properly, and I’m enjoying it a lot! Now that I’ve bound a book for
[personal profile] acid, I’m also playing with the idea to offer my services to fanfiction writers. I’m sure there are a couple out there who’d love to see their work bound. I’m not yet confident enough in my skills to accept commissions though, but maybe one day.

I love music and my taste is quite varied, so it's hard to pick a favourite song. However, if I had to, I'd probably pick
Medusa by Brendan Perry, a dark, melancholic Gothic song. This is one of the few songs that I can listen to over and over again without getting bored. Brendan’s slow, drawling singing voice is just fantastic. The song is sad and hauting, but also very beautiful and I love it to bits.

Running water. I adore the feeling of water falling on my skin. Whether it’s in the shower or outside in the rain; it doesn’t really matter. I drove my parents to exasperation when I was younger because I would take forever to shower. They gave me all kinds of weird punishments to get me to be faster, but it never worked and they gave up when I was 16. Right now I try to be a little more careful with it, due to environmental concerns. However, since I was raised a vegetarian and therefore never directly contributed to the bio industry and all the pollution that comes with it, I allow myself to indulge in a super long shower every now and then.

Hiking. Going for a hike is one of my favourite things to do. Luckily I have a few friends who love it too and we regularly go out for looooong walks. I love it even more if we go on a multi-day hike and combine it with camping. Being out and about in nature and having the freedom to put your tent anywhere and wake up to the most beautiful views is the best feeling in the world!

Reading fanfic after midnight. I’m a die-hard evening person and especially love the time after midnight, when most people are in bed and I feel as if I have the whole world to myself. Reading fanfic is my favourite activity at that time. I feel very calm at night, hardly troubled by my daytime stress, so I’m in a much better space of mind to enjoy a good story than I am during the rest of the day. Unfortunately, I can’t keep this night owl schedule anymore now that I’m working and I dearly miss it. But I go back to my crazy bed times and indulge in all the fic whenever I have a few days off.

This year, I've decided to participate in HP Horrorfest for the first time and wrote a sad story called Green. The fest is not pairing specific and I was nervous to step out of my comfortable Snarry bubble, but I ended up enjoying it a lot! It was very valuable to get feedback from people who don't ship Snarry at all. To everyone who commented, thank you so much for your kind words!

The fest was also memorable because it was the first time that I worked with a beta. I was very nervous about it beforehand, but I shouldn't have been. Having my story beta-read was a great experience and the final fic was so much better than it would have been without someone else's suggestions. A huge thank you to [personal profile] acid for all your help! It was very much appreciated.

I enjoyed each and every entry in the fest, but there were a few that really stood out to me. For anyone interested, I'll post a few recs below. Coincidentally, all of them are gen.

In the Dark, Deep Woods by hiddenhibernian was probably my favourite from the whole fest. It was a beautiful, gritty dystopia told from Ginny's POV. The characters were well-written and the worldbuilding was interesting and believable, very impressive for a 3,6k fic. I've come across this writer more often and was always impressed by their work, so I was happy to see this one was theirs. Highly recommended!

Skin Jar by BirdieMing was such a nice surprise. It's only 8k and takes place in Cokeworth, the summer after the Snape-Lily incident. Surprisingly though, it is told from Petunia's POV. I was delighted to see a fic revolve around her and found her reasoning and motivations very believable. The only downside is that I don't think Petunia would outslytherin Snape, not even a young one, and therefore the second half of the story didn't work as well for me. Nevertheless, great story!

Down in the Ground by Coriaria was a creepy fic in which a Harry suffering from PTSD is sent to a mental institution. It's only 8k and the author has chosen to spend more storytime on showing us the tentative friendships Harry is building with the other inmates than on the horrors of the mad house, and it worked so well for me! It's truly a good story. The weakest part, however, was the final chapter, because it feels somewhat rushed. You can skip it though, even according to the author themselves. You'll still have a proper ending when you do, just not a very happy one.

Those were my recs. I enjoyed this fest a lot and am so happy that I decided to participate. A huge thank you to the mods for hosting it and to everyone else who has helped making it a success!

(Edit november 2018: I've now decided to orphan this particular fic. My feelings from the post below were genuine, so I will not remove it. However, I have removed the title of and links to the fic, for obvious reasons.)

The Secret Snarry Swap 2017 has officially ended. There were so many amazing fics this year! I enjoyed reading each and every one of them and was waiting with bated breath for the next fic every day. In fact, I had such a great time, that I'm almost sorry to see it end. Almost. Because I'm also very happy to finally be able to reply to all the lovely people who left a comment on my work!

My story is probably the most ridiculous thing ever written, so I was a little nervous that people would consider it too over the top. Once again, it turned out I shouldn't have worried, because the response was absolutely fantastic! Honesly, I was completely blown away by all the amazing comments. Thank you so, so much! I'm incredibly happy that my silly story managed to make so many people smile and very grateful to everyone who took the time to let me know!

Also a big thank you to the mods for the very generous extension and all their help afterwards. I'd also like to thank the lovely [livejournal.com profile] ladyofsd
big time for the amazing prompt! It inspired me very much, as you have seen ;). I'm also thrilled with your comment! It honestly made my day. But most of all, I'm just very, very happy that you enjoyed your gift. I couldn't keep a straight face writing it and I'm pleased that reading it was just as enjoyable for you :D.

All in all, I had an amazing time and I'm very much looking forward to the next fest!

It is official: I have made my writing debut! I participated in the Secret Snarry Swap 2016 and I am so, so happy that I did! The experience has been a great one. The amazing response to my own fic has absolutely blown me away. Since I can't get back to you personally until after the Big Reveal, I want to thank you all via this route for your kudos and kind words. They really do mean a lot. They made me go from someone who was absolutely terrified of sharing her work to someone who is looking forward to doing it again. I cannot thank you enough for that!

And if that wasn't enough to be happy about already, a great fic has been written for my prompt as well. It is called A Boy and his Broom and I am absolutely thrilled with it! Thank you so much, mystery author :). Yes, this Secret Snarry Swap has been a  great experience.
Now all that is left for me to do is wish you all a merry Christmas, or Hannukah sameach, and definitely a happy new year. I am sure 2017 will be great!

As long as I don't have to look at my fic ever again.... ;)

Edit: My fic is called A Guide to Achieving Maximum Impact and can be found on AO3 here and on DW here.

Hi,

Nice to meet you! I'm new here. My name is Antuhsa, which means 'human' in a language that died out long before Christ ever set foot on this planet. I am a human, of the female kind, and was born and raised in a small country on the European continent.

I started this journal mainly for fanfiction purposes. I discovered fanfiction about two years ago, more or less by accident. Of course I had known about its existence for much longer, but I wasn't interested. It turned out I just hadn't come across the right kind of fanfiction. In the end, all it took was a a lightning bolt shaped scar, combined with an equal amount of black, greasy hair, just a hint of acerbic wit, and I was off.

I haven't looked back since.

In the process of making my way through all the Snarry's on AFF.net, I became acquainted with fanfic-reader-frustration No. 1: becoming well and truly hooked by a great fic, only to discover it has been left unfinished for years. Tormenting as that experience was, it did motivate me to start writing myself and bring an old hobby back to life.

And so I did. I started writing and the ideas flowed from my pen, fic after fic after fic. I outlined them, wrote the first few chapters, and started on the next one. Outlined, started writing, and moved on to the next idea. And again. And again. And again. I must have a dozen half-finished fics lying around by now. All of which I look forward to sharing, but.... I've got to finish them first. Realising I seem to be unable to do so on my own, I decided to join DW. I discovered many of my favourite writers were here, so I hope I will find what I need here too. I've already seen the Snarry community is absolutely lovely, so I have no doubt I will one day manage to overcome my anxiety and go for it.

In the meantime I will use this journal to keep track of what is going on in the Snarry world and connect with others. Looking forward to it!
